I'm three weeks old today...

Here are a few pictures from the past week. All is still going well. Mom is exhausted and Dad wishes he could stay home with us instead of working. Never-the-less...we are beginning to establish routines. Fender sleeps very well most nights, only waking to feed about 3 or 4AM and then again about 7AM. He is more alert for longer periods of time during the day and captivates us all with his big blue eyes. We're still waiting to see what color his eyes and hair turn, or if they will stay the same.

Fender & Sebastian...the early days...

Week two...

Fen and I had our two week checkups today. All went well for both of us. Fen weighed in at 8lbs 4oz today. That is an increase from his birth weight of 7lbs 10oz and was over a 1lb increase from the weight he left the hospital at, which was 7lbs. Yea. And for all the "short" comments we got from the sono staff during the pregnancy, he has grown over an inch more now and is in the 75% height range, putting him above average. Our little boy is doing great!

My body is recovering from the surgery pretty well. I've lost 20 lbs since delivery day and doc says my incision is healing very well. I was okayed to resume all normal day-to-day activities...walking, driving, etc. Yea. Now I just need to get that spare carseat base into my truck so we get get out once in a while.

Drew is faring pretty well too. He is busy with work and studying for his exam in a few short weeks, then gets to take care of me and Fen, so he's probably the most overwhelmed of us all, but he really seems to love being a daddy!!!

Here are more pictures from the past few days.

Life adjustments...

Things are still going beautifully. Drew and I are beginning to establish a routine, but when he heads back to work on Monday we'll have to make adjustments once again. At the moment, Fender has been sleeping pretty well at night. We typically have to wake up about 3 or 4 AM for a feeding, and then we are good until about 7AM. After his morning feeding, Fen gets "nap time" on Daddy's chest while Momma (that's me) gets to grab a morning shake, have time with Sebastian outside, shower, and cleanup before the next feeding. Mornings are great!! The rest of the day is mostly feeding and sleeping for Fen. Drew studies and helps clean house, do laundry, and fix food. I try to rest most of the time between feedings. My insides are still recovering from th c-section. Hurts tons when I let my pain killers wear off completely. I take them much less now, but regret it if I take too little. It serves as a good reminder that I am still recovering and need to take it easy. So that's what I'm trying to do...at least through the weekend while I still have Drew.

Here are a couple more pictures from the past few days...

Fun firsts...

Daddy puts on his first diaper before I get to see him:

Mom's first time with Fender (still on the operating table):

First shampoo and first time home:

So much fun...

Didn't get much sleep the first two days...in fact...I didn't get any. Daddy got about 2 hours total the first two days. But all of that is much better now. We're home from the hospital and everything is going well so far. We have been so blessed with a safe and successful delivery; beautiful, healthy, happy baby; terrific doctors, nurses, and lactation consultants; and the very best support from family and friends! Everything has really been lots of fun. Tiresome and trying at times, but we are enjoying every minute.

Here's each of us in the final minutes before Fender was born:

What I still find amazing is that we arrived at the hospital at 7AM hoping that he might have turned back around on his own, or planning to try the "version" technique, but he was still breech and the doctors decided the risk to try and turn him was too great and probably wouldn't be successful with the low fluid, his size, and being only 1 week from his due date. Not skipping a beat, they immediately prepared us for epidural and c-section, and two hours after arriving, we were holding our baby boy! Incredible!

Birthdays, Breech Babies, and Baby Rooms...

Yesterday was my 30th birthday and Drew threw me a fantastic party with family, friends, football, ice cream cakes and all. The big topic was our baby boy being breech at the moment. Most comments were that c-sections are fine and don't worry about it, rather than suggestions as to how to get him to flip. I have been amazed at how many people have actually suggested that my concern is about having the scar from the procedure or being scared of the process. I'm not sure how well some people know me. I can't imagine being so vane or insecure that I would worry about a scar. I hadn't even given that a second thought. And I've seen countless c-section on labor and delivery stories for the past several years and I've heard so many friends and relatives tell about their experience that I hadn't even given the dangers of a c-section a second thought either. My two primary concerns were that 1) Should we (God-willing) get pregnant again, in this day and age, it can be difficult to find a doctor willing to let you try to have a baby naturally after having a c-section. A minor problem, I hope, but one I will expect to encounter. And 2) breastfeeding with a c-section seems much more difficult for many reasons and the success rate is much lower. Reasons for breastfeeding difficulty include the extra pain and recovery period from having the c-section and you don't get the immediate wide-awake baby to try and nurse immediately because of the drugs involved and having to be stitched back up and moved to recovery all before letting him attempt to suckle. They don't often nurse well initially because of the drugs, which can delay the milk coming in too, but if he doesn't latch on well, I can pump and we will work it all out. I'm feeling better about it all, but my preference, of course, would be to have him turn and give me a shot at doing it all naturally still.

Fender got a few new things in the mail this weekend too.

So that was Saturday...today was Football Sunday. Cowboys had another great game! Oh...and Texas Tech won for me yesterday too. :) Anyway...I woke up with so much energy today. After feeling overwhelmed the past two days about the possibility of having a baby on Wednesday with so much left to do around the house and no energy to do it...I woke up with the complete opposite feeling this morning. Despite having about 4 hours sleep last night and 2 the night before, I woke up this morning with tons of energy and motivation and a truly wonderful feeling that I could get everything done that I needed to...and probably before the football games started. Long story short...I got to home depot with my sister this morning, bought a couple of things needed to complete the baby's room, had them cut, got to dad's with a small project for him to finish up, which he did, then brought it back to us at the house and helped us finish up the room. Now the room is done...as far as it is going to be and I feel great. I even got to nap and rest today while Dad, Loren and Drew did everything else. Simply fantastic.

(White closet door installed, and panel board covered up eye sore. Yea.)

Fender has been moving around TONS this weekend, especially today, but I have no idea what position he is in. Not sure I've felt that he has turned, but then again, there was just lots of movement before and I didn't know he turned. Here's to hoping all is right...and to knowing we still have two more days if it isn't.

From "cruise control" to breech baby blunder...

At last week's appointment, my doc said everything continues to look good and I seem to be on "cruise control" just waiting until he's ready to put me into labor. Well, at this week's appointment, the cruise came off when she found the heartbeat way up high as opposed to way down low where he's been head down and ready to pop out for the past 11 weeks. Apparently, he finally got tired of standing on his head and decided it was time for a change. Not so funny at this point in the game. Oh well...I can imagine there will be many times when he will try to lull us into a false sense of security and then throw us for a loop.

So doc grabbed the sono machine just to make sure and yep...his head was up high. He's breach. He turned this past week. I think two days before because the last two nights, my squats felt different...like his head wasn't in my pelvis as good, and I hadn't had to head to the bathroom near as much. Well, I processed the info as calmly as possible and listened to what the doc now recommended and here it is...

She scheduled us for an appointment THIS WEDNESDAY, at the hospital at 6:30AM to try a technique called "external version," which has a 50/50 chance of turning a breech baby to the head down position. It can be fairly painful for me and there are risks involved, such as mine and baby's reaction to the meds they have to give me to relax the uterus. The placenta could also rupture due to the pressure being put on it, and the baby may not tolerate all of it either, causing his heartrate to decelerate and stay down...in any of those situations, she said we'd go ahead with a c-section, which is why they typically perform the technique with an epidural in.

Well, after some discussion, and knowing how much I wanted to try to have a natural birth, she said what she thinks we ought to do is try to do the version once, without the epidural. If he turns, great, we come home and wait for labor and pray he doesn't turn back to breech. If he doesn't turn, she recommends we put in the epidural and try a second time. If unsuccessful, the second time, she wants to go ahead with a c-section on Wednesday anyway, since we are there, I'll have the epi in and he's already full term and only one week from his due date. But it is up to us, and she said we can choose to go home and if he doesn't turn in a week, she'd want to do the c-section on his due date the following Wednesday.

She said...in the mean time, go home, read up and try anything you can find on how to turn a breech baby. I told her I planned on trying the Webster technique with a chiroporactor too. She was fine with all of it and said she'd see me Wednesday morning.

I found a chiropractor who specialized in the technique and in adjusting pregnant women and she was open on Saturday. Dad drove me over to have the adjustment. I'll go back on Monday to be adjusted again. We've also tried lifting my pelvis higher to use gravity to get him back toward my chest, where he has more room to turn. We put ice on my chest because some babies turn from the cold. We played music at my pelvis because some babies turn to the music. And we have tried accupressure on the exterior pinky toes because one chiropractor said it turned breech babies to head down, 70% of the time. I feel good about having tried everything we could try. I'm resting and relaxing and not worrying about any of it. What will be will be. But I am praying he turns down and that the umbilical cord doesn't get wrapped around him in the process. We won't know if anything worked until Wednesday, but I will say that he has been extremely active...especially today...so there is always hope...which has been my motto since youth when my mom told it to me...

"Always hope for the best and expect(or plan for) the worst." That way you are prepared if things get as bad as they can get, but are pleasantly surprised if they don't turn out that bad at all. :)
